Scholarships & Awards

The following scholarships and awards are given annually to math majors. Recipients are honored at the annual department awards reception.

Bessie Pond Eppes Scholarship
Established by Anne E. Regester, W'39, to honor her mother Bessie Pond Eppes, who appreciated the educational opportunities given to her during her days as a student at Westhampton College. This scholarship honors a female student who has demonstrated an interest and aptitude in mathematics, has displayed good citizenship, maintains at least a 2.0 GPA and acts in a manner that enhances the mathematics program.

E. Sherman Grable Scholarship
Established in 1992, this scholarship honors Sherman Grable, a professor of mathematics at the University of Richmond for over forty years. Declared mathematics and computer science majors, who qualify for financial aid and who continue to maintain at least a 2.5 GPA, are eligible to receive the scholarship.

James D. Crump Prize in Mathematics
Founded in 1893 by James D. Crump, this award honors a senior who has demonstrated excellence in mathematics. Mr. Crump was a Richmond College Trustee for 10 years, until his death. During his tenure, he made a substantial contribution to the College. The award is presented at graduation.

“Outstanding Student in Mathematics” Award
Each year, the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science honors the most outstanding students in mathematics with this award. Students’ names are engraved on a plaque that hangs in the department office.

V.S. Lawrence Scholarship
This scholarship honors student majoring in mathematics. When financial need is a factor for consideration, candidates must submit their names to the Office of Financial Aid.
